Innovation is born from a desire to create change for the better. And, yet, too often people give up on their most ambitious ideas for change. What does it take to turn a dream into a promise, and to keep it? In this keynote, Ewan will share lessons from undertaking more strategy in a year than most directors get to do in a lifetime, through hundreds of strategic planning projects across 72 countries. What is strategy, really, and how can anyone create a meaningful strategy that gets a whole community engaged and excited about their future? One clue: it’s got nothing to do with planning.

Session time:
30 Oct 2023 - 12:35 to 13:20 Beyond Sustainability - from immersive education to living buildings Beyond Sustainability - from immersive education to living buildings Europe/London public

The topic of sustainable future is certainly one of the leitmotifs not only in education, but in every area of our life. However, the issues of the future of the educational environment, including the school building as such, go beyond sustainability as it is usually understood. Within this panel, we propose to address the following questions and try to find answers by approaching urban planners and those engineering solutions that are already ahead of the future:

•          The school building is rapidly becoming outdated; hybrid forms of education constantly demand varieties of different spaces; sustainability paradigm demands to address environment issues – thus we need to catch a glimpse of the future, what are the areas of further development? What solutions can we offer here in terms of engineering, technologies, design and architecture?

•          What are the “futuristic” scenarios of a learning environment? Is it possible for a school building to become "immersive" or "alive"? Can it respond to a certain state of mind and body? or anticipate some type of activity? Is it possible for a school building to be responsive to the emotional needs of our teachers and students? Would schools accept such an offer from designers and engineers?

•          What can existing “futuristic” sustainable and regenerative schools offer to other schools? Any recipes for others to start doing something today?

Within our panel three representatives of three incredible progressive schools are going to discuss some of the issues described with the representative of Arup company - a trend setter for future engineering solutions and urban planning. School is never just a building – it’s always a larger ecosystem, a community builder.

Session time:
30 Oct 2023 - 13:20 to 13:40 The 3 Rules of Kindness – A Leaders Perspective The 3 Rules of Kindness – A Leaders Perspective Europe/London public

The presentation will emphasise the importance of leading with kindness, which improves employee satisfaction scores and positively contributes to the leader’s personal well-being. As the Principal and Chief Operating Officer of the Nordic International School in Lahore, Pakistan, it is these 3 rules which have allowed me to manage the daily pressures of leading both the academic and management side of the school. In this presentation, I will talk about tools to manage your own emotions effectively. Moreover, I will explain the importance of having frameworks around day-to-day conversations to improve communication effectiveness within the organisation. For a school nominated as a finalist for the GESS International Awards 2021 and 2022, in the category of "Community Award for Citizenship" and employee satisfaction scores of 4.7/5, this is the leader’s playbook for success.

13:40 - 14:00Disrupting Tradition: Introducing Future Domains Beyond Conventional Subjects

Session time:
30 Oct 2023 - 13:40 to 14:00 Disrupting Tradition: Introducing Future Domains Beyond Conventional Subjects Disrupting Tradition: Introducing Future Domains Beyond Conventional Subjects Europe/London public

In this GESS keynote talk, we offer, after extensive research, an invitation to journey with us into the innovative frontiers of education, where conventional subjects are replaced by domains reflecting the realities of the future. This cutting-edge model transforms the educational landscape, aligning it with the dynamism of the 21st-century world and empowering students with the multifaceted skills they need to flourish in rapidly evolving fields.

 We are moving beyond words.

The escalating pace of global change has exposed the inadequacies of traditional educational paradigms. To address this, we've developed a skills-first model that integrates vital Emotional Intelligence (EQ) skills with revolutionary curriculum themes, all underpinned by the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). We've identified four key future domains - Genomics, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Systems, and Environmental Systems - representing the vanguard of scientific and technological progress, crucial for tackling global challenges and catalysing change.

My talk will explore how we infuse a broad spectrum of EQ skills, ranging from creativity and critical thinking to empathy and global citizenship, into these futuristic domains. The integration of UDL principles ensures our model caters to diverse learning needs, promoting inclusive, adaptable, and effective teaching strategies.

In essence, we aim to shatter the traditional boundaries of education and pioneer an approach that readies our learners not just to adapt, but to thrive and lead in the emerging future. This journey requires a shared vision and commitment, and we invite you to join the THINK Learning Studio as we reshape the contours of the educational landscape.

School leaders, along with their governors or owners, usually create a forward looking and ambitious vision for their school. But often reality does not deliver that vision. Schools do what they have always done and school leaders struggle to connect vision to reality in their institution. 11:10 - 11:30Sustainability in Schools – A Collaborative Systems Change Approach

Session time:
31 Oct 2023 - 11:10 to 11:30 Sustainability in Schools – A Collaborative Systems Change Approach Sustainability in Schools – A Collaborative Systems Change Approach Europe/London public

This session will answer the following questions: what does sustainability in schools look like, and how can we work together to catalyse systems change whilst engaging students to advocate for sustainable alternatives? 90% of a school’s environmental impact comes from four areas – transport, buildings, food, and uniforms. Making these sustainable requires a problem-solving approach at the systems level. Schools can have a significant influence and are much more likely to achieve change in these areas by working together rather than by acting individually.

As an agent of change, The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS) harnesses the collective influence of its members, engages with their students, and partners with innovative organisations in their local communities to catalyse systems change in five focus areas – school food, school buses, school uniforms, school buildings and education for sustainability.

The press is filled almost every day with reports of increased stress and mental health issues that schools are facing and most focus on concerns about the wellbeing of students, while a smaller number seek to highlight the issues surrounding school leaders stress. Very few pay attention to the increasing challenges of the school leader’s role and the impact that school leader burnout may have not just on schools but also on society. Emotionally healthy teachers and education staff make effective learning possible. For school leaders, the pressure is real and unrelenting. Even if they are not adversely concerned about external scrutiny and league tables, the load they put on themselves to ensure they are doing the best possible job for the students in their care is often a cause of anxiety

12:15 - 12:35Experiential Learning: Achieving Successful Transition into the 21st Century Workplace

1 Nov 2023 - 12:15 to 12:35 Experiential Learning: Achieving Successful Transition into the 21st Century Workplace Experiential Learning: Achieving Successful Transition into the 21st Century Workplace Europe/London public

To support students transitioning effectively into the rapidly changing 21st century workplace, educators must provide opportunities for students to apply, contextualise and situate knowledge. Authentic experiential learning, exposing students to collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork and technology utilization, allows for exploration, learning from errors, and fostersr  adaptability, resilience, and creative problem-solving abilities.  Extending experiential learning beyond the classroom into real-world settings through work-based learning, apprenticeships, or professional placements further develops the skills and attributes students need to transition successfully into employment.

Session time:
1 Nov 2023 - 12:35 to 12:55 The Artificial (but Solvable) Discontinuity between Secondary and Tertiary The Artificial (but Solvable) Discontinuity between Secondary and Tertiary Europe/London public

Just over a decade ago, a censorious book was published, claiming that the majority of students in American universities were not improving in their skills of critical thinking and writing as a result of their university education (Arum & Roksa, 2010). This text provided ammunition on behalf of the many critics of higher education, in particular the institutional constructs that permitted often comical but limited examples of academic freedom, excessive intellectualism from the liberal arts, and politically driven scholarship and teaching. It offered data to support the common assertion among employers, increasingly up to that point, that significant and troubling skill deficiencies existed among many university graduates. While many employer complaints were fully unfair--as employers have frequently passed the responsibility of on-the-job training to universities--this attitude had permeated the culture, often as a result of well-known entrepreneurs bragging that they had been successful without a university degree (e.g., Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg). Since that time, higher education has become much more adept at presenting itself as job-focused, amenable to lifelong learning. Universities talk about micro-credentials that allow for flexible delivery of timely skills. They boast about the employment rates of graduates.

They hesitate but still steadily adopt and adapt to technologies. In short, institutions of higher education are responding to the global critique that ivory tower institutional behaviours do not fit with fast-changing labour markets. But the core delivery mechanisms, including the institutions of academia (i.e. the disciplines), have not changed much. The term “institution” in this sense refers to the social constructs of a profession or system, in this case, academic faculty, who largely control the terms of delivery within universities and colleges. Compared to quickly adapting secondary curricula, which have over the past decade become more focused on generalizable skills and cross-disciplinary functions, such as the International Baccalaureate and the slow but steady movement away from rote memorization in Advanced Placement (American) and A-Level (British), higher education is still burdened by deep hierarchies that reinforce traditional modes of educational delivery. In a sense, the abrupt transition marker from secondary to tertiary education is a reminder that the social institutional constructs of school education and university education are in different spheres. This division does not need to persist. In my talk, I will briefly explore why this division exists and what both secondary and tertiary institutions (as well as regulators) can do to ensure that the generalizable skill gains from secondary curricula continue into tertiary institutions.

14:45 - 15:05So…What Does An Outstanding Teacher Do?

Session time:
1 Nov 2023 - 14:45 to 15:05 So…What Does An Outstanding Teacher Do? So…What Does An Outstanding Teacher Do? Europe/London public

What distinguishes an Outstanding Teacher? A question asked in numerous interviews - and one that's much easier to ask than to answer. Many teachers will admit they don’t actually know what ‘Outstanding’ looks like. It's not about creating jazz hands lessons for a one-off observation, through 'prepping, stressing and box-ticking'. It isn’t something that can be achieved in a single lesson. It is a craft that needs developing like any other skill. Influenced by John Hattie's Visible Learning research, So…What does an Outstanding Teacher Do? provides practical guidance and opportunities for self-reflection for teachers who want to maximise their positive impact on students’ learning. Whether you are a PGCE Student, an ECT or a practising teacher, this is an accessible guide for any teacher who aspires to maximise their positive impact and become truly outstanding.

15:05 - 15:25The Impact of Career Guidance for Career Readiness with Secondary Students in the United Arab Emirates

Session time:
1 Nov 2023 - 15:05 to 15:25 The Impact of Career Guidance for Career Readiness with Secondary Students in the United Arab Emirates The Impact of Career Guidance for Career Readiness with Secondary Students in the United Arab Emirates Europe/London public

Career readiness is about helping young people gain awareness of self, knowledge of the requirements for work, and the skills to reason for oneself to make career choices for their future. The efforts to help people identify with careers have been traced back to the fifteenth century. However, the responsibilities for career guidance and career readiness for adolescents are an ongoing debate between educators and policymakers. The assumptions about career readiness are that the responsibility lies in the hands of secondary education institutions and that young people are appropriately guided, making them career ready. However, factors such as accountability, curriculum constraints, and the skills gap contribute to young people's ongoing challenges, leaving them vulnerable, and unemployed. This talk will share my study that explored the assumptions, the bias, the expectations, and the multiple perspectives within the community of expatriate students impacted career guidance.
