Zayed University weaves ideal ambience for students of determination

ABU DHABI: Omar Abdallah Al Hashimi, a Zayed University student who suffers from visual impairment, has urged “students of determination” to enrol in Zayed University to enjoy a comfortable educational journey.

Currently in his second year at the College of Communication and Media Sciences, Al Hashimi represents the Department of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) at the higher education and career exhibition, Najah, which took place from Oct 25-27, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec).

“I dream of becoming a radio station host to guide, through my channel, people of determination to the latest activities and events they can confidently attend. After all, we are part of the society,” he said.

Al Hashimi receives medical, mental and physical support from Zayed University’s Department of Student Accessibility Services.

“I’m truly honoured to represent Zayed University at Najah exhibition or any forthcoming events. The name itself stands out,” he said. “Fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, Zayed University provides “students of determination” with properly crafted educational materials that are suitable to their physical condition.”

SAS, Al Hashimi said, provides a variety of specialised services, high-quality systems and topnotch tools that ease educational requirements. “When approached by other differently-abled high school students, I represent a university community that treats me with complete respect and care. I am treated as a group member. I have never felt left out or mistreated. High school was a complete nightmare when compared to life at university,” he said.

Fatma Al Qasimi, Director of the Department of Student Accessibility Services, said, “We push students of determination to believe in themselves. We share with them examples of their peers that have achieved excellence and serve in different government entities across the UAE.

“We provide them with equal growth opportunities by offering them state-of-the-art educational and recreational facilities that enhance their academic, personal, and professional development,” Al Qasimi added.

“Special needs students, with determination, are at the forefront of our wise leadership’s priorities, who aim to enhance their involvement in society. Therefore, in the name of Zayed University, we aim to educate, care and foster a friendly environment for students of determination. I truly believe in their capabilities and urge them to push forward to partake in the ongoing national development process. They are true heroes and heroines,” she said.

Najah, which is running for the 11th consecutive year, is one of the UAE’s leading higher education and career exhibitions. It was launched on Wednesday by Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Tolerance, at Adnec.

Student Accessibility Services centres, which had assembled at both Zayed University campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, are considered the first of their kind in the region.

The centres provide great opportunities for students of determination, offer a variety of learning and communication aid kits dedicated to sustain an academic link between them, their peers and faculty members, plus contribute to supporting and enhancing their scientific advancement.
